Burning your Joomla! feeds with FeedBurner and .htaccess

I've got my feeds running trough FeedBurner now and maybe you like to know how we (Robin and me) did it.

The first step you need to take is creating a FeedBurner account and add your Joomla! feed url's to the FeedBurner system. Once that's done it's time to start up your text-editor and open the .htaccess file which you can find in your Joomla! root directory.

My Joomla! global config SEF settings are set to produce Search Engine Friendly url's with mod_rewrite on to get rid of the index.php in your url's.

Have a look at the following lines of code that I had to add to my .htaccess file to redirect the Joomla! feed url's to FeedBurner.

RewriteEngine On

# Feedburner
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !FeedBurner
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^format=feed&type=rss$
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/woofandwarp [R=301,L]

RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !FeedBurner
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^format=feed&type=rss$
RewriteRule ^joomla$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/woofandwarp/joomla [R=301,L]

The first three FeedBurner rules are for the main feed and the second three are for the joomla category feed with url http://woofandwarp.com/joomla. You can repeat the last three rules for every section or category feed url. Make sure the feeds are created on FeedBurner of course.

Hi, thx for these suggestions. my problem is that my feed is redirected to

http://feeds.feedburner.com/pastor-buddy?format=feed&type=rss

instead of

http://feeds.feedburner.com/pastor-buddy

Do you know why that is and how I can change it? Thx, Simon

I think this is the answer to my problem but I am not a code geek. Is this a bug or design problem with Joomla that feeds work so inconsistently?

I don't understand why something as elemental as producing proper feeds isn't built in?
